Sept-Art Artemia Cysts

The Sep-Art Technology is based on an ingenious aquaculture invention. Sep-Art Artemia cysts are not a new strain of cysts, but the Sep-Art Technology provides a magnetic coating on the cysts. This new technology is highly efficient and allows a fast and complete separation of nauplii and unhatched cysts. Sep-Art Artemia Cysts (90% hatching) are coated with a carefully selected non-toxic layer of magnetic material. They look like normal cysts and the hatching instructions are identical. After hatching the Sep-Art Artemia Cysts, drain or siphon the nauplii and unhatched cysts into the Sep-Art Separator. The Separator contains a strong built-in magnet: unhatched cysts are trapped by the magnet on the bottom of the Separator. The non-magnetic free swimming nauplii are ready to use. Thanks to the gentle separation process, the nauplii are extremely viable.

  • Use in combination with the Sep-Art Separator.

  • Store the Sep-Art Artemia Cysts in a cool and dry place.

Why Use Sept-Art Atrtemia Cysts?

It is known that Artemia nauplii are an ideal food for invertebrates and early life stages of fish. One of the main disadvantages of this food can be the presence of shell material amongst the nauplii after hatching. The shell material can obstruct the fragile intestines of larvae and is an important source of bacterial contamination. Feeding nauplli mixed with unhatched cysts to reef aquaria, jellyfish or fish larvae is often more harmfull than realized.

People use several “tricks” in order to avoid or remove the unhatched cysts in between the nauplii: the use of light to attract nauplii, double sieving, decapsulation (the removal of the cyst shells with chlorine)… However, these ways of working will never result in a harvest of 100 % live nauplii, can damage the animals, are labor intensive and sometimes even environmentally unfriendly (decapsulation).

Thanks to this new technology the separation of nauplii and unhatcehd cysts has never been easier.

As it only takes a few minutes, the separation is very fast and easy. You only need the Sep-Art Separator as there’s no other need for large equipments, materials or chemical products. The separation process is really gentle which results in extremely viable nauplii to feed or in an excellent condition of the nauplii ready to enrich.

How does it work?

The application of the Sep-Art Technology does not alter the hatching requirements of the Artemia Cysts. This means that Sep-Art Artemia Cysts are hatched under exactly the same conditions as normal cysts:

  • Under optimal conditions, the hatching will be completed within 24 hours.
  • Stop aeration and remove light source.
  • After approximately 5 minutes, drain or siphon the nauplii and unhatched cysts from the cone tip into the Sep-Art Separator. Avoid to transfer empty floating shells.
  • The Separator contains a strong built-in magnet. Let the unhatched cysts settle on the bottom of the Separator for 1 to 5 minutes depending on the volume.
  • Gently pour out the pure nauplii suspension from the Separator.
  • It is advised to rinse the pure nauplii on an Artemia sieve as you are used to.

The maintenance of the Separator is very easy. The cyst shell material attracted by the built-in magnet can easily be washed out with running tap water. Eventually remaining particles can be removed with a tissue.
